New Berlin is a city in Waukesha County, Wisconsin. The population was 38,220 at the 2000 census. The City of New Berlin integrates the best of two worlds with modern convenience and a wealth of opportunity joining with personalized hospitality and small-town charm. New Berlin is large enough to support comprehensive services and quality of resources, yet small enough to maintain comfort and tranquility. Throughout the City's 36 square miles, residents enjoy City Living with a Touch of Country.

The area's first settlers, Sidney Evans and P.G. Harrington, arrived in the northeastern part of what is now the City of New Berlin in 1836. The area first came under local government in 1838 as part of the Town of Muskego, which at the time, was composed of New Berlin and Muskego. The area that is now the City of New Berlin was separated from the Town of Muskego in 1839 and given the name Town of Mentor. On January 13, 1840, the Town of Mentor became the Town of New Berlin. It was named by Sidney Evans in honor of his hometown, New Berlin, New York.

The Town of New Berlin remained a rural and agricultural area until the 1940s when the westward migration to the suburbs from Milwaukee began. Proud residents had originally put the accent on the second syllable, rendering the pronunciation just like the German city. But, in these years dominated by stories of Nazi atrocities and German imperialism in World War II, area residents began to pronounce their hometown by accenting the first syllable of Berlin (nu BERR-lin) rather than the second in a patriotic determination to disassociate themselves from Evans' homeland. Between 1850 and 1950, New Berlin's population went from 1,293 to 5,334. Ten years later, in 1960, the population had nearly tripled to 15,788. The Town of New Berlin became the City of New Berlin with its incorporation in 1959.

Large scale growth to New Berlin, Wisconsin, occurred in the 1960s and 1970s mainly as a result of the construction of the New Berlin Industrial Park which began in 1964. This park is a vital economic resource to the City of New Berlin, and the Milwaukee Region. The Park is composed of actually three separate business parks encompassing 1,126 acres. The business parks include the Moorland Road Industrial Park, the New Berlin Industrial Park and the MSI/Lincoln Avenue Industrial Park. Interstate 43 has since also been expanded at the Moorland Road exit in order to accommodate a growing number of commuters from the suburb. The new interchange has a two-lane roundabout that has been the center of a great deal of controversy because of the high number of accidents and traffic back-ups on Interstate 43.

Today, New Berlin, Wisconsin, is a young community on the edge of a metropolitan city that affords its residents the best of both worlds. Rightly proud of the parks, schools and industry that came together to serve as the basis of a quality city, New Berlin is responsible for maintenance of 26 park sites totaling approximately 855 acres of which 372 acres are developed parks, 107 acres are preserved as conservancy, another 187 acres comprise the New Berlin Hills Golf Course, with the remaining 199 acres are in various states of development. Facilities include playing fields at Malone Park, near New Berlin's City Hall, and a disc golf course at Valley View Park, in the southeastern part of the city. New Berlin also offers an array of accommodation options, offering travelers of all types somewhere to rest before pursuing recreational adventure in this Wisconsin town.

Among the many fascinating New Berlin area attractions is the Weston Antique Apple Orchard. Originally planted by orchardist Ken Weston’s grandparents as a hedge against the Depression, this orchard grew to inspire such respect that it once hosted Julia Child for a visit. Weston’s offerings have grown over the years to include more than 100 apple varieties, many of them rare.

Recently, in 2009, Money Magazine ranked New Berlin #34 in its Top 100 List of Best Small American Towns in which to live.
